Self-Esteem: Dove Video Misses Target Audience What do you think?

Dove Donating $100,000 after Video Gets 100,000 Views

Dove's promo video, "Singin' in the Rain" for Dove's new product, a shampoo promising to keep your hair Frizz -Free, misses its target audience. Watching young nubile women turn cartwheels in filmy dresses may appeal to the guy who dreamed up this video, me?- leaves me cold.

Want to keep my attention? Toss in a few virile bare-chested men, raindrops glistening off their rain-slick hair-now that would keep me watching, and engage my imagination.

So Dove, bribery will make this video shareable, but will it help me remember your product? Doubt it. To make a video memorable to women, it needs to engage the mind. Men are visual, while women are aural, therefore, you need to engage a woman's mind to make something memorable. The name of the product being flashed on the screen - forgotten already. Sorry, Dove you've missed the mark with this one.

What do you think?

Get Involved!

WWOOM is a very grass roots, fledgling group. The most important thing to do is to take care of yourself, then try to pass the message along to at least 3 women each day.

There are many different ways people can be involved in the WWOOM project. Here are a few ideas:

Posting on the Blog:

Guest posts are welcome in any of the following formats:

  • Orally recorded on YouTube or another audio device, or
  • a piece of writing  or
  • a photo, picture, or other artwork
Submissions can be  posted on http://wwoom.blogspot.com either by email, or using a free blogging tool such as Windows Live Writer

Twitter

Women can  tweet their self-care message using text messaging or a computer. Messages with the hashtag #WWOOM  automatically appear at http://WomenWOOM  allowing others to easily find  messages and respond with words of encouragement.

Responding to Messages

Men and women can also participate  by responding to messages women post about their self-care with words of positive encouragement either by "Liking" a post on the blog, or anywhere they are found and tagging it #WWOOM to raise awareness of the importance of women caring for themselves.

Attend/Host a WWOOM Party

A fourth way women can get involved is by either coming to, or hosting a public WWOOM party on the 8th of the month, and perhaps bringing an example of something they would like to share about the importance of women caring for themselves. If you are hosting an open public event, please comment on the blog about it , so it can be added to the WWOOM map and calendar.

Men can Participate Too

Gentlemen are encouraged to assist women in their lives in caring for themselves. first (I pointed out to one man at Peterborough Square: Encouraging women in your life to care for themselves first is really a selfish act- if they are ill, they can't care for you!) Men are welcome to post about how they are encouraging women in their lives to care for themselves first, and encourage other men to do the same.

Aims of WOOM Participation

We want this to be helpful to all women everywhere. WWOOM is meant as a way of  validating the importance of what we women are doing to care for ourselves, whether it is caring for our bodies and physical health, our spiritual health, or mental health and feeling of well being. It is also a validation of our own cultural knowledge about how women can care for themselves. Thanks to Google translate, writing is accepted in any language. Messages must be family friendly as it is an open blog.

If you would like assistance in participating in this project, I am more than willing to help either by phone, Skype, email or in person*.

Please let me know  how I can help you.

Looking forward to helping you implement this important project,

Suzanne Sholer B.A.B.Ed.

Co-founder:WWOOM

*Note Travel expenses for in person assistance must be born by the person or group asking for assistance.

Nap Power:

Power Naps Bring Many Health Benefits

What did you do for yourself today? I gave myself a nap. In our hurried, type-A world, naps are rarely valued, but now more and more companies are tapping into scientific research that points to increased productivity through napping. There are companies that even offer sleeping pods for businesses, or off site napping facilities. This post lists some tips and information I discovered about the benefits of napping, and how to change your life through napping.

According to Dr. Sara Mednick Phd, health benefits of napping include:

Choices - International Women's Day Leftovers- Please Reply

Thoughts Following International Women's Day
Yesterday was the 100th Anniversary of International Women's Day. What thoughts do you have after this historic event? How do they relate to the gift your giving yourself today?

Please post your International Women's Day leftover (or hangover) thoughts as a comment on this post, or link to your blog from this post. If you find International Women's Day leftover (or hangover) thoughts, please help gather them by Tweeting them with the hashtag #IWDLO or leave a comment on this post with a link to the article.

Here are my thoughts, my gift to myself, and the video I'm giving myself time to watch:

The 100th Anniversary of International Women's Day has come and gone. In some countries, women took great personal risk to voice their discontent with the status quo. In other countries, women have never heard of International Women's Day and face a great many challenges. In some so called "primitive cultures, women are held in high esteem, and have the upper hand.(See Reference1). While in many western countries, the importance of the day has been subjugated by ideas of "We've come a long way, and now we can rest on our laurels.", or "We're more fortunate than women in other countries, what do we have to complain about?".

While the positives in culture, politics, health, and other areas are important to hold up as standards to which we can all strive. We must also be vigilant to preserve these positives, lest we become complacent and they become lost. During the 1940's, while women and men were away at war, women on the homefront were needed to fulfill manufacturing roles, therefore many important advances were made to enable women's participation in the work force. Those advances were lost when men returned home from the war, and the average wage for USA working women was reduced from 75 cents to 45cents a week, and daycare centers run by Boards of Education were closed ( See Ref. 2). A further nail was driven in the coffin of child care in the USA in 1971, by then president Nixon, with the veto of the Economic Opportunity Amendments (Ref 3.)

So what does this have to do with putting on our own oxygen masks and caring for ourselves?

The barriers of - "at least you have x,y,z in your country", are false barriers that need to be avoided at all costs if we are to create change in the world. As women we need to put aside false barriers that divide and recognize the things we have in common. There are some things we cannot change (except through plastic surgery) How we deal with things we cannot change, is dependent on how we choose to view them. We can choose to feel sorry for ourselves, we can choose to be angry, we can choose to cherish, we can choose to value, we can choose to feel fortunate, or we can choose to rejoice. We need to allow ourselves to choose.

Today I am giving myself the gift of choosing to rejoice. I will cherish the hot flashes that allow me to wear a summer wardrobe in the dead of winter. I will relish the hot flashes that keep me toasty warm at night.I will cherish the quiet hours of morning when pain draws me from my slumber giving me the gift of a silent house so I can think without interruption. I will choose to laugh, and increase my serotonin levels,(See Ref 4) which will increase my happiness even further, so by evening I should be ecstatic! Here is my first step in my serotonin boost for today: Bookie Bell on Laughter Therapy: Thanks for your uplifting thoughts yesterday!

Women Wearing Our Oxygen Masks

For centuries women have cared for others before themselves to the detriment of all involved. We need to put on our oxygen masks first. This blog has come about as a result of needing to create a name and a space to own what we are doing.
